NZTA Transmission Gully (SH1)

Back to projects

Project overview
A critical 27km link in the SH1 Wellington Northern Corridor, built to provide a safer, more reliable route through challenging terrain and seismic fault lines. Transmission Gully required lighting for the new road between Tawa and Paekākāriki, to support safe night driving on critical transport infrastructure, with Fulton Hogan providing traffic management and control services for major road works and construction projects.

Problem
The new Transmission Gully road needed a reliable lighting solution to support nighttime visibility and safe travel along the route.

Solution
Excel Switchgear delivered 38 bespoke weatherproof switchboards distrubuted across the main alignment for 27km.

Impact
The lighting solution helped provide critical infrastructure for night driving along the corridor. This isn’t just a series of boards, it’s the backbone powering the high-output lighting infrastructure for one of New Zealand’s most complex and resilient motorway developments.

These switchboards ensure that the four major interchanges and key safety zones remain illuminated, providing high-visibility transit for thousands of motorists daily while supporting the new 110km/h speed limit.

Currently successfully commissioned and fully operational as a vital part of New Zealand’s transport network.

Services provided:

  • Design and manufacture of 38 bespoke street lighting weatherproof electrical switchboards.
  • Support for transport infrastructure lighting.
  • Critical Infrastructure designed for 24/7 reliability and safety.
